The absolute worst idea for a Chicago Wedding.

The Receiving Line

This out dated tradition was never a good idea. Here’s why….

First let’s define how it works:
Mother of the Bride
Mother of the Groom
Bride
Groom
Maid of Honor
Stand should to shoulder at the entrance to the ballroom.

All the guests line up and one by one say congratulations to everyone in the receiving line.

This was originally invented to make sure everyone gets a chance to thank their guests.

Here’s why it doesn’t work:

It’s rush hour. You’re on the expressway with 6 lanes. Everyone is trying to make their way through the traffic to get to work.  Now imagine taking those 6 lanes of traffic being forced to 1 lane. Now how long would it take you to get to work?!

Traffic

Receiving lines do the exact same thing to your Chicago wedding.

Let’s say you have 200 guests. Each of them has to stand in line and then say hello to each person in the receiving line. Obviously your guests can’t have any kind of a conversation with you.  It’s more like leaving the airplane saying “Buh Bye” to the flight attendants.

Here’s the math: 200 guests each get 30 seconds to get through the line. That’s an extra 100 minutes before even starting your dinner or dancing. What kind of a mood will your Chicago Wedding guests be after standing in line for over an hour?

You’ll have plenty of time throughout the evening to say chat with all your guests without the receiving line. Trust me, it’s out dated for a reason and will destroy your Chicago wedding schedule, Just say no to receiving lines!

  Best Wishes,

Hi David, I just read your blog on receiving lines. I actually agree with that, however our wedding is in October and we are not having a sit down dinner. It is hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, what would you then suggest as a way Sean and I ensure we are able to greet everyone?
    Thanks. Maureen
