First dance

Written by Marc Robisch

The first dance for a married couple is important because it shows the guests two people coming together as one. It is a moment to share with the person you love most. Whether you are spinning them around in your arms, gently swaying or getting lost in their eyes the first dance is a treasured moment between couples.
Picking the right song can be tough. You want it to sum up how you feel about each other, but it’s hard to put all your feelings together in one song. Here are some great first dance wedding songs:

Troye Sivan – ‘WILD’

Australian singer Troye Sivan, released his debut album ‘Blue Neighbourhood’ in December. The lead single, ‘WILD’ is a dream-pop track Troye wrote about being infatuated with someone else. He sings about how he can’t get the person he loves out of his mind and the love he feels. Troye may be young, but he can write one hell of a romantic song. The dreamy chorus is a perfect match for a happy couple head over heels with each other.

Nat King Cole – ‘Unforgettable’

Do you want something slow and classic as your first dance? Look no further than Nat King Cole. ‘Unforgettable’ is simple, and it is great for the couple looking to have a moderate reception. Let Nat King Cole’s smooth voice take you and your partner away to a wonderful place.

Beyonce – ‘XO’

Beyonce has one of the strongest voices in music. She can sing a club banger or a power ballad anytime. Queen B slows things down a bit on ‘XO’. Beyonce has a bit of a gravelly tone to her voice and it blends perfectly with the echoed production. There is a joyous element to ‘XO’ that will leave everyone in the room with a smile on their face.

Frank Sinatra – ‘The Way You Look Tonight’

You can’t go wrong with Frank Sinatra. The man has some of the most classic songs ever. Some people may feel a bit uncomfortable with a super slow song as their first dance, so ‘The Way You Look Tonight’ is a great alternative to a moody slow jam. Dance happily with the one you love to Ol’ Blue Eyes, and let the fun begin.

Madonna – ‘Ghosttown’

‘Ghosttown’, one of Madonna’s newer songs, is one that encompasses vulnerability and strength at the same time. Madonna said the theme of ‘Ghosttown’ is there are the two last people on Earth, everything is in ruins and all you have is each other. Your wedding is a big deal, but look past all the dresses, flowers and food, and see what it’s really about: the one you love. At the end of the day, you will always have each other — that’s what ‘Ghosttown’ is about.

Etta James – ‘At Last’

‘At Last’ is one of the most popular first dance songs at weddings. It is a classic that can’t be topped. Etta James has a special kind of soul to her voice, and ‘At Last’ really encapsulates all the feelings you have for your significant other: after searching years, you’ve finally found the love of your life.
